The National Vietnam Veterans Museum
What you need to know
One of the sometimes more forgotten - yet no less significant - conflicts of recent history, the Vietnam war and its courageous veterans are the key focus of this excellent Phillip Island museum. Located at Newhaven, this relatively new cultural attraction is highly moving to visit and boasts an impressive collection of items and exhibits in various forms. Spread out over 2 levels, the National Vietnam Veterans Museum is stacked to the brim with fascinating photos, articles and artefacts as well as political cartoons from the era for an additional layer of context.
Standout exhibits even include full-scale tanks, helicopters and other aircraft, with more being added as restoration proceeds and the museum continues to expand. The museum is also staffed by passionate volunteers who help to raise awareness of the conflict and its veterans - some of whom have firsthand experience of the war itself. One of its most inventive highlights is an excellent holographic presentation that documents some of the key components of the war utilising light and sound to full effect. The museum is open daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm, with a very reasonable entry price given its possible to spend several hours here. A humbling experience, and a must-visit on Phillip Island.
