What you need to know

Located at Victor Harbour in the heart of its main entertainment district, the South Australian Whale centre sits within an old heritage building and is home to a number of interesting displays and artefacts reflecting the region's maritime history - and its old whaling past. Educational for adults and kids alike, the Whale Centre chronicles whaling history from decades past while also offering up to date information on whale sightings for those looking to embark on some whale watching in this lovely coastal part of SA.

The information is presented via a collection of both static and interactive exhibits - which children in particular will appreciate - that are set out over 3 floors, each of which offers slightly different display types. The centre also incorporates audio-visual presentations that provide further in-depth info on whales' habits, migration patterns, diets and various other factoids, as well as a treasure hunt to provide children with a dose of fun while they (hopefully) learn something along the way.

Without a doubt the centre's most obvious highlight is, however, its massive whale skeleton which helps convey the sheer scale of these gentle giants of the sea. The South Australian Whale Centre is open every day, with prices clocking in at $9 for adults, $4.50 for kids, or $24 for a family of four. If you're in the Victor Harbor area with kids, then it's well worth a visit - particularly when combined with a tram ride as it sits right alongside the tram's station.
