What you need to know

Connected to neighbouring Victor Harbor via causeway lies the nature reserve of Granite Island, a small yet ruggedly beautiful island that makes for an immensely pleasant spot to explore. Accessible from the mainland via its signature pier - which can be navigated either on foot or via the region's iconic horse-drawn tram which features elsewhere on this list - the island has long been a sanctuary for cute Fairy Penguins. While their numbers have unfortunately experienced a dramatic drop over the past decade, these cuddly creatures can still be found on the island, particularly during their set feeding times - also unfortunately, the long-running Penguin Centre on the island has recently closed down.

While the penguins themselves are an undoubted highlight, the island itself also is an attraction in and of itself, with a flat and well-formed pathway encompassing its surface that grants excellent views of its landscape and the surrounding coastal panorama. This is a leisurely stroll that returns some wonderful scenery for relatively little effort and requires only around half an hour to complete, and as such is one of this part of South Australia's most enjoyable experiences - especially when paired with taking the tram on the return trip.
