What you need to know

Victoria's Sovereign Hill allows visitors to take a journey into the gold rush period of the 1800s, featuring an authentically-recreated town and plenty to see. Set out over an expansive 25 hectare area, it's like stepping back in time as the town features craftsmen at work, over 50 majestic horses including Clydesdales, a variety of demonstrations and shows throughout the day and much more. With a ticket to Sovereign Hill, you can find yourself panning for real gold, witness musket firing, see boiled lollies being made, see wheels, candles, and other goods being made, and learn about the history of the early colonial and Gold Rush times that brought a huge amount of immigration to this region of Victoria.

Operating Hours

  • Sovereign Hill is open daily except Christmas Day (25th December) from 10am to 5pm.


  • Sovereign Hill is a comfortable 90 minute drive from the Melbourne CBD along the Western Highway (or only an hour from Melbourne Airport). Once in Ballarat, follow the brown and white tourist signs to Sovereign Hill
