What you need to know

This quality cultural attraction on Adelaide's North Terrace is an excellent curation on South Australian antiquity all the way from prehistory to the present, with a comprehensive blend of both natural and indigenous history. Home to one of Australia's most extensive displays of indigenous Aboriginal art, artifacts and history in general, the South Australian Museum covers the entirety of the Aboriginal culture through both stories and physical items such as boomerangs, medicinal techniques and various other crafts. With main displays spread out over a robust 3 levels alongside intermittent specialty exhibitions, the museum communicates the past via both static and interactive exhibits that include photos, videos, interactive monitors and more to cater for all learning styles.

Natural history documented here is also in-depth, with a great deal of taxidermic creatures both large and small that showcase the variety of South Australian wildlife. Skeletons of whales and dolphins are striking to see to scale, and the museum's wonderful Antarctic display also does a great job of examining Australia's historic involvement with the frozen continent. In all, the museum is one of Adelaide's best indoor activities for excessively hot or rainy days that can be experienced for free (although a donation is recommended).
