What you need to know

Relatively small on size but big on tranquility, this gift to Adelaide from Japanese sister city Himeji in the early 1980's is a contemplative oasis in the city's south terrace and contains many features typical to traditional Japanese gardens. All the hallmarks of their minimalist design - such as well-manicured shrubs and trees, the incorporation of sand, still ponds and the clever use of empty space - can be found here, and it's a great, hidden spot to escape to for some peace and quiet within easy reach of the CBD. Himeji Gardens has space for picnics and blends together both a sufficient amount of sunny and shaded areas to make it comfortable to visit regardless of season, and the ever-present sound of running water adds to the atmosphere of peace that permeates the green surrounds.

The garden is divided up into two distinct sections - a "water" and "dry" area - each with a different physical emphasis, however both are designed to evoke the inherent beauty of nature. While it's possible to circumnavigate Himeji Gardens in 10 to 15 minutes, that entirely misses the point of a visit here; instead, grab a book or bring along a packed lunch, empty your mind, and enjoy a welcome respite from the bustle of urban life.
